Rosalie Bay Distillery is the world's only conservation distillery, established to contribute 100% of its earnings to support critical, local marine conservation efforts. RBD produces award-winning ultra-premium craft rums, traceable from farm to glass, at their facility in Rosalie, Dominica. The distillery is the brain-child of a team at Oceans Forward, a marine conservation organization that works “to create a world where the ocean and people are thriving together, with long-lasting, community-centered conservation solutions that push traditional boundaries to make the impossible a reality.” Harold Guiste, President of Dominica Sea Turtle Conservation Organization, a partner of RBD, explains, “By selling a premium craft spirit, we can ensure the long-term stability of conservation initiatives, uninterrupted by fluctuations in tourism revenue or grant availability.” RBD directs all its earnings to support local conservation work. This innovative concept also provides much-needed economic opportunities through jobs in sugar cane farming, supply chain, and distillery operations, opportunities that in turn aid conservation efforts by reducing human pressures on marine resources.
The marketing message of Rosalie Bay Distillery is “Pour to Protect” and links its sales of a popular spirit, with an international market and steady demand, to having a direct impact on protecting ocean resources and the communities in Dominica who depend on them for their health and well-being. Linking craft rum to ocean conservation will ensure the financial sustainability of efforts to protect marine resources. Oceans Forward Board Member Marcella Harris agrees: “Every bottle of rum contributes directly to nurturing a healthier ocean, and provides a connection to the community and environment that it came from."
Simon Walsh, Ocean Forward’s Director of Coral Restoration, says that the connection between Rosalie Bay Distilling and marine conservation is more than monetary; it’s about enabling conservation into the future. “Dominica’s coral reefs are thousands of years old. Turtles and whales are pretty long-lived, too. Understanding if our conservation efforts are working takes time, just like properly aging our rum takes time. From coral conservation to rum production, our work teaches us to be patient and forward-looking and to plan for the long term.”
“The Anthem Awards were born out of the desire to amplify and celebrate the voices that are creating sustainable change and to inspire others to take action,” said Patricia McLoughlin, Anthem Awards General Manager. “In a year where so much is at stake, it is incredibly important to recognize impact work and celebrate the progress happening globally. Congratulations to all of this year’s Nominees and Winners.”
The 5th Annual Anthem Awards was the most competitive season yet with more than 2,300 entries submitted from 34 countries worldwide. By amplifying the voices that spark global change, the Anthem Awards are defining a new benchmark for impactful work that inspires others to take action in their communities. A portion of program revenue is allocated to our grant program, The Anthem Fund.
